Viessmann Gas Boiler Replacement In Gloucester MA
The Smith residence gave Townsend Energy a call because their Munchin boiler stopped working. Their gas boiler was old and outdated. Also, Munchin no longer produced the parts that were required for the necessary repairs. For this reason, our technician recommended a boiler replacement for their Gloucester MA home.
Problem: The Smith family’s Munchin boiler was no longer working.
Solution: Townsend Energy installed a Viessmann Vitoden gas boiler in their home. This boiler model hangs on a wall, and therefore, our technicians built one to ensure proper installation.
Vitoden 200 Gas Boiler

Viessmann manufactures some of the best heating systems on the market today. They are built to last as they come with a stainless steel heat exchanger. Likewise, they also come with a stainless steel cylinder burner. The heat exchanger in this model has self-cleaning features. These components’ design ensures a long lifespan and dependability. Other features that this boiler offers include:
- Limited lifetime warranty
- Multiple venting options-vent length up to 180 ft.
- Compact and lightweight design
- Lambda Pro Gas Management System: adjusts fuel use to meet heating needs, increasing energy efficiency
- Quiet operation-is quieter than most refrigerators
- AFUE: up to 95%
- 5-year limited parts warranty and limited lifetime warranty for the pressure vessel
- Low emission combustion and environmentally friendly
- Rated by Energy Star as “Most Efficient 2016” and “Most Efficient 2018”
A new heating system significantly increases a home’s property value. This Viessmann boiler will provide the comfort and warmth that the Smith family needs to get through the cold Massachusetts winters. Also, they will pay much less on their home heating costs, meaning that this system will, over time, pay for itself. The Smiths are happy with their upgrade.
Benefits Of Replacing Your Boiler
There are many benefits that you can gain by choosing to upgrade your current boiler to a new gas model.
A Warmer And Far More Comfortable Home
Over time, boilers that are outdated and old tend to become a lot less efficient. They struggle to make homes warm and comfortable. A more modern, gas boiler, however, can easily make your living environment a toasty and pleasant one.
Reduce Your Home Heating Costs
As a general rule of thumb, the older that a boiler becomes; the more inefficient it becomes as well. This aspect means that having an old boiler in your home can significantly increase your heating costs. Upgrading your gas boiler to a much newer and far more efficient option will substantially limit this portion of your overhead expenses.
Greater Peace Of Mind
Having a modern gas boiler installed won’t just diminish your home heating costs – it will also give you far more peace of mind. A new unit will last much longer, work more efficiently, and give you more protection against unexpected problems and breakdowns – the boiler manufacturer will also give you a good warranty.
Better Temperature Control
New gas boilers have innovative heating controls that will allow you to create and maintain the ideal temperature in your home easily. You can accurately determine how much heat is being disbursed to individual building areas. This way, you can enjoy increased home comfort and substantial savings simultaneously.
Increase The Value Of Your Property
The value of your home will increase after you’ve had an A-rated gas boiler installed, and your home will additionally have a higher overall efficiency rating.
Downsize Your Unit
Modern gas boilers are noticeably smaller in size than more dated units. There are also far more options to choose from when selecting a replacement. Many of the top designs are compact enough to fit right inside of a regular cupboard. For some homeowners, this is a great way to free up additional, usable space.
Enjoy Quiet Operation
Because of their improved designs and their much higher quality materials, upgraded gas boilers tend to operate far more quietly than most older models do.
Top Signs You Need A Boiler Replacement
According to Energy.gov, you should start preparing for a boiler replacement once your unit is 15 years old or beyond. Smart homeowners, however, do more than merely track the lifespans of their home heating units. They also diligently look for signs that this equipment needs replacing.
Several common signs that might indicate the need for a boiler replacement is:
- An increasingly frequent need for repairs
- Growing fuel costs
- Yellow flames or black soot
- Boiler leaks
Let’s look more deeply at some of these signs and find out why they often mean that a boiler needs to be replaced.
An Increased Need For Boiler Repairs
If it’s been necessary to pay for boiler repairs about once every six months, then getting new heating equipment is probably going to be a lot more cost-effective.
Why is this so? Well, the more wear that boilers sustain, the more likely they are to break down. If your unit needs repairs with increasing frequency, you have to take the time to determine whether spending money on a failing appliance is worthwhile.
How you should see the matter: It usually costs several hundred dollars to have a boiler repaired. Now, imagine if many repairs are necessary. These are costs that can add up fast. Rather than spending all of your cash on a unit that will probably stop working altogether within the next year or so, you can save your money for the costs of a boiler replacement instead.
Your Home Heating Costs Are Becoming Much Higher
As a boiler ages, it will have to do more work to generate a comparable amount of heat. For example, Energy.gov reports that boilers can use more fuel to produce the same amount of heat due to scale build-up. As such, home utility bills will start to rise.
As time passes, all boilers will begin to develop a layer of scale on their heat transfer surfaces that are the result of dissolved particulates within the necessary water. This scale decreases the heat that is being transferred to the water and ultimately to the home by creating unneeded insulation. Thus, the boiler must use more fuel than it was using before to keep the indoor environment both comfortable and warm.
The Appearance Of Yellow Flames
When your boiler starts emitting a yellow flame rather than a blue one, it means that fuel is no longer burning correctly and that the boiler needs a replacement.
Why should you replace this boiler as soon as you possibly can? Well, when boilers stop burning gas like they’re supposed to, they burn yellow. They begin producing carbon monoxide, a colorless and odorless gas that can prove lethal at certain levels. Even at very low levels, carbon monoxide can cause problems like headaches, dizziness, nausea and chest pain.
So, how come your gas isn’t burning correctly anymore? Over time, boilers can become clogged with dirt and soot that prevents gas and oxygen from mixing successfully. An imbalance between fuel and oxygen will prevent complete combustion and create yellow flames.
Your Boiler Seems To Be Leaking All The Time
When boilers get older, they often develop water leaks. As time passes, small leaks can become much larger and may create a significant amount of water damage in the home.
Over time, boiler leaks can result from:
- Cracks in the body of the unit, usually the result of corrosion or stress fractions inside of the metal
- Increased pressure
- Damaged seals
When boilers have small leaks, they need to be replaced. When boiler metal has become sufficiently weak for allowing small-sized leaks to develop, more leaks are likely to occur over time.

Extremely pleased with the gentleman who arrived on time at my home to do maintenance on my Forced Hot Air furnace which had not been cleaned for 4 years. He was able to discover a few major issues with my first floor AC preventing the AC to function. He was able to replace them and the AC became alive. It has been running since. Temp in the 80 ies that day. Very patient. It was a long day for this gentleman. Thanks so much..

Genius Service Guy BRIAN MOTASCIO gets five stars!
Bruce and Meg Herman - Gloucester, MA 01930
This is a five star review but it starts out with a negative- if I had to rate my service calls this fall/winter before Brian Mostascio showed up today, it would have been one star- I had really nice service guys come out before, but they did not fix the problem. But Townsend redeemed themselves today. FIVE STARS for Brian Motascio. First of all, I have to explain that my husband who used to deal with all this stuff, lost his hearing suddenly last year, so all the noises of unhappy boilers and car engines are up to me to hear and deal with. We do have a boiler service contract with Townsend, and the boiler had been running rough since it was tweaked in the fall during its the annual servicing. So I'd called several times to get service guys out to try to fix it. They did not fix the problem and in one case made it worse. The last guy who came last week, tinkered with it a little but did not take anything apart, and in retrospect I think he was trying to be kind and just do SOMETHING so I felt like I was being taken seriously, but he said the boiler sound was totally normal and left, but I knew it was NOT normal. I fretted that I if called Townsend YET AGAIN, I was going to have the reputation of being the "Boiler Hypochondriac Lady". But I gritted my teeth and called again yesterday, and luckily got Ellen on the phone again (she is GREAT by the way) who then sent me a total brainiac service guy, BRIAN MOSTASCIO, who showed up at 7:30 am, listened carefully as I explained all the problems: the rough super low frequency rumbling of the combustion, the smell of unburnt oil in the air outside, the combustion process in the chamber causing a Helmholtz Resonance effect in the basement (that feeling in your ears when you have one window down in the back of your car) the furnace going on and off for too short a time all day and night- on for a few seconds, going off for a minute, then on again for a few seconds, etc etc. Plus just to walk in to the basement and feel a slight Helmholtz Resonance was REALLY unpleasant. And we were using up way too much oil for the mild temperatures we've had. Brian Mustascio LISTENED to me, listened to the boiler, and then got to work, taking everything apart, and plugging in gadgets to read oil pressure, read CO2, etc. He replaced the oil injector nozzle, (the wrong large size had been installed before to "fix" the problem), and took his time to get everything JUST RIGHT. Within less than an hour, the boiler was literally PURRING like it is supposed to. I could not have thanked him more profusely. His buddy John Paul Solano showed up at the end, listened to what had just been done, and totally got it. So glad I have another witness to testify that I am not the Hypochondriac Boiler Lady after all. I am not rating the cost of the service because I don't think I have any cost because I have a service contract. But if they do try to bill me, I will need to point to all the ways they messed it up before it was fixed.
